Transformation Update: individual consultations on job cuts

We contacted you last week about Aberdeen City Council’s consultation on job cuts. We know that you will be anxious to hear what’s happening with your role and when changes will be taking place.

In the last few days we have been provided with more information on management proposals and the case for change. UNISON now has enough information that we can represent you in these meetings. While we still believe some of this is patchy, we have agreed to progress to the individual meeting stage.

About your individual consultation meeting

No one should be invited to a meeting unprepared. You should be provided with rationale and information about changes to your role at least 24 hours in advance. If you are invited to a meeting where information will be handed over, the sole purpose of that meeting is to receive information and you have not yet been consulted. A follow-up must be arranged for your consultation allowing you time to digest the information.

To help us represent you, make sure you tell us what information you are or aren’t being given in these meetings. For example, if you raise health and safety risks, it is important that management show you they have considered these and have a plan to deal with it. You always have a right be accompanied by your local UNISON rep to your individual meetings and can find your local rep by going to https://aberdeenunison.co.uk/in-your-workplace/

Dealing with VSER

For those who are looking to take VSER, this means that management can now approve applications. The Council is aiming to make savings from 1 July 2018, so it is likely that this will be the latest date your VSER application is approved for. If you’re concerned that you aren’t getting the deal you deserve, contact your local UNISON rep to discuss it. You can also access free financial advice from Lighthouse Financial Services as a UNISON member at https://benefits.unison.org.uk/unison-living/money/lighthouse-financial-advice/.

UNISON can only help you effectively if you talk to your local steward. We rely on members like you letting us know when you need help and support. Being a member of a trade union gives you a powerful voice, but this is heard loudest only when we stand up #togetherinUNISON.

Yours sincerely
