Statement on cuts, redundancies and jobs at Aberdeen City Council

UNISON Aberdeen City has agreed that we would defend members’ jobs and support those who wished to leave ACC voluntarily. There are certain principles which we abide by. The first one of these is that we will oppose redundancy whether straightforward Compulsory Redundancy or by implication / the back door. UNISON is questioning the statement that the Council only ‘hopes’ to achieve savings by voluntary means and we are seeking a more robust commitment to no compulsory redundancies from politicians and management.

With the scale of savings required to be made in conjunction with the Transformation it is clear that ACC would require to resort to job losses.

We are fully engaged with all consultation opportunities available to us and we will continue to scrutinise and challenge proposals and defend our members’ jobs. UNISON represents members by participating fully in the Delivery and Control Boards within the Transformation Programme and would encourage members to raise issues with the branch so we can we can be as effective as possible.

While ACC is hoping to achieve redeployment for any staff at risk of redundancy, UNISON will continue to ask how this will be achievable going forward. Meantime we will continue to ensure that fair and appropriate procedures are followed in accordance with current policy.

Members are strongly encouraged to contact their UNISON steward immediately if they believe they are at risk from this.

To find out who your local steward is, get in touch with us about a workplace issues, or raise a concern about transformation use the forms on our website.

  1. I’m not a member of any union but I regret that now, is it too late to join and have future support regarding the Target Operating Model that Aberdeen City Council is currently working on? I am on the in scope list for Business Services, and looking at the figures that ACC wants to reduce job wise, I fear I may be in that firing line.

    • Hi Gary – because of the “four week rule” we may not be able to give you full representation for issues which arise before that period ends. However, we can provide other advice. If you join the union and contact your local steward, they will be able to advise you on your position and what kind of representation you are currently entitled to. You can join by going to join.unison.org.uk. In most cases related to the TOM, now is the perfect time to sign up and get support!
