Stress in the Workplace Survey

During November 2019, the branch ran an survey to gather information on the levels of stress members were encountering as a result of the implementation of the new Target Operating Model [TOM]. Stewards and Branch Officers were becoming increasingly aware of the high-levels of stress and anxiety being present in members, who’s work load had been impacted by the V.S.E.R process (where staff were leaving under the scheme but their workloads were being passed to the staff who remained at ACC).

The survey was based on the six-factors used by the Health and Safety Executive [H.S.E] to define and quantify stress in the workplace. These are defined as:

  • Demand – managing the workload, conflicting demands, unrealistic timescales and emotional demands
  • Control – how much say a worker has in the way they do their work
  • Support – the support and encouragement provided by employer, manager and colleagues
  • Relationships – positive working environment, procedures for managing conflict, dealing with unacceptable behaviours
  • Role – managers ensuring workers understand their roles, and that their roles do not conflict
  • Change – how employers manage and communicate organisational change.

In additions members were asked to identify the function they worked within, and optionally the cluster. We also asked for general comments from members. The responses to the six-factors has provided valuable statistical information, and the anecdotal comments has produced qualitative data to assess stress patterns and causes across the membership.

The report on the survey is available here: Stress Survey Report Nov 2019 - Final Draft (002).

Thank you to all the members who responded to the survey. If you have any additional comments or queries please feel free to contact Les Tarr on letarr@aberdeencity.gov.uk
